Josep Maria Haro, a psychiatrist and doctor in public health, is the director of research and teaching at the Sant Joan de Déu health park in Barcelona, Spain and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Barcelona.
Following his medical studies, he studied epidemiology and public health at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (Baltimore, MD, USA). Later he specialized in psychiatry at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. For the past 25 years, he has worked in both clinical medicine and public health research and published more than 300 scientific papers.
His areas of research have been the epidemiology of mental disorders and the analysis of treatment results. As a researcher in the epidemiology of mental disorders, he has conducted studies on the prevalence and impact of disorders on the general population and the treatment of mental disorders in primary care. His latest studies focus on the determinants of healthy ageing, analyzing both the impact of physical and mental comorbidity and the effect of social and environmental aspects. In health outcomes, he has been interested in the consequences of mental disorders on patients' functioning and quality of life and on their impact on society at large.
Dr Haro is a lead researcher on one of the CIBERSAM network groups. In 2011, he was awarded the prize for the best researcher of the Spanish Society of Biological Psychiatry.
