The European Research Council (ERC), under Horizon Europe, funds ambitious frontier research led by outstanding researchers. The Advanced Grant supports established research leaders with a strong track record who want to develop a ground-breaking, high-risk/high-gain project in any research field, with no predefined thematic priorities. Projects are led by a single Principal Investigator and can run for up to 5 years. The call uses a single full proposal submission followed by a two-step evaluation, including an interview at Step 2. The aim is to support excellent Principal Investigators with bold ideas that can push the frontiers of knowledge.

Requisits
  • Open to active, established research leaders with a significant track record of research achievements; no specific academic eligibility requirement is foreseen.
  • Applications can be submitted in any field of research; ERC funding is bottom-up and based on scientific excellence.
  • The proposal must be submitted by a single Principal Investigator on behalf of a Host Institution.
  • The Host Institution must be established in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country, or be an eligible European/international organisation under the call rules.
  • The PI can be of any nationality and does not need to be employed by the Host Institution at submission, but must be engaged by it for at least the duration of the grant.
  • The PI must dedicate at least 30% of their working time to the ERC Advanced Grant project and spend at least 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
  • Eligible public bodies, research organisations and higher education institutions in EU Member States or Associated Countries must have a Gender Equality Plan or equivalent strategic document in place for the project duration.
  • ERC submission restrictions apply, including limits on holding or applying for other ERC main frontier research grants and restrictions linked to previous ERC evaluation outcomes.
