Description:

The Bial Foundation supports research into the physical and mental processes of healthy human beings, particularly topics that remain underexplored but can be studied through rigorous scientific methods. The 2026/2027 programme funds projects exclusively in Psychophysiology and Parapsychology, including research carried out individually or by teams. Projects may last up to three years and must begin between 1 January and 31 October 2027. Clinical or experimental research on human diseases and therapies is outside the scope of this call.

Objective: To deepen scientific understanding of less-explored physical, mental and spiritual aspects of healthy human beings.

Requirements
  • Researchers of any nationality may apply, either individually or as part of a team.
  • Employees of the Bial Foundation or any company belonging to the Bial Group are not eligible.
  • A Principal Investigator may appoint an optional co-Principal Investigator.
  • The application must include a Host Entity that agrees to provide the technical and logistical resources needed to carry out the project. The Principal Investigator does not need to be employed by this entity.
  • The Host Entity will sign the funding agreement and receive all grant payments.
  • Principal Investigators or co-Principal Investigators with an ongoing project funded through a Bial Foundation Grant or the Maria de Sousa Award may apply. However, the new grant can only begin after successful completion of the ongoing project, which must end before 31 October 2027.
  • Applications must be submitted electronically and written in English. All budget amounts must be stated in euros.
  • The application must include the researchers' CVs, a detailed project description, timetable, budget and information about the Host Entity and research centre, where applicable.
  • CVs must be written in English and cannot exceed four pages per team member.
  • Where the project involves animals, human participants, biological material or sensitive data, evidence that it has been submitted to the relevant ethics committee must be included. Formal ethics approval will be required before the funding agreement is issued.
  • Identical or substantially similar applications submitted in the same edition may all be excluded.
  • Projects may form part of a master's or doctoral programme, but tuition fees are not eligible.
  • The following proposals are not eligible:
    • Projects involving clinical or experimental models of human disease or therapy.
    • Projects mainly focused on eating behaviour, sexual behaviour or physical exercise.
    • Fundamental neuroscience projects addressing cellular, molecular or biochemical brain mechanisms without a direct and clear psychophysiological measure.
    • Applications without a Host Entity.
