The EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships aim to support postdoctoral researchers in the life sciences through international mobility and high-level training in leading laboratories.

Benefits:
EMBO funds host institutions in EMBC Member States to issue employment contracts covering the fellow's net salary, employer and employee social contributions, and taxes.
If the host is outside the EMBC Member States, the fellow receives a stipend instead.
The fellowship does not cover overheads, bench fees, consumables, or other financial support for the host institution or supervisor. -
Duration:
Fellowships are awarded for up to 2 years, with a minimum of 1 year. The project must begin within 12 months of the relevant evaluation deadline. -

Two reference letters
A host institution acceptance letter

The application must be complete by the cut-off date to be considered.-
Spring call: 4th Friday of January (results around mid-June)

Autumn call: 2nd Friday of July (results around mid-December)
Applications are accepted year-round and assigned to one of these two evaluation rounds based on submission date.

Eligibility

PhD status: Applicants must hold a PhD at the start of the fellowship and must have obtained it within the last two years before application.

Publication: At least one first-author research paper accepted or published in a peer-reviewed international journal, or a preprint with independent, public peer reviews.

International mobility is mandatory:

Cannot apply to a country where the PhD was awarded.

Cannot return to a lab where the applicant worked more than 6 months.

Cannot return to the PhD lab or work again with the PhD supervisor, regardless of location.

If the applicant already works in the host lab, they must have started less than 6 months before the application.

Only one application per round is allowed; reapplication is permitted only once.

Projects that are a direct continuation of the PhD work are not eligible.

Exceptions to eligibility are only made in cases of parental leave, serious illness, or military service, and must be pre-approved by the EMBO Fellowship Office.
Voluntary career breaks are not accepted as valid exceptions.
