Marcel Arias Badia is a Barcelona native with a degree in Biotechnology and Biochemistry from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He completed his PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona in the Oncolytic Virotherapy group led by Dr. Ramon Alemany, at ICO-IDIBELL (Barcelona).
From 2020 to 2025 he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Specialist in the laboratory of Dr. Lawrence Fong, at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF, United States). There he delved into the analysis of the antitumor immune response in various preclinical models and with data from oncological patients, specializing in the characterization of γδ T cells and in the intervention with antibodies that inhibit immune checkpoints. He has also worked in the biotech sector contributing to the preclinical development of immunotherapies against cancer, such as oncolytic adenoviruses (Theriva Biologics) or dual CAR T cells (OneChain Immunotherapeutics).
He is currently a CarrerasLeaders IJC/SJD researcher and leads the functional immunophenotyping line of pediatric acute myeloid leukemias within the PHeM (Pediatric Hematological Malignancies) program. His research seeks to exploit the antileukemic capabilities of γδ T cells to improve clinical responses in pediatric patients.
